It's no secret that an amazing short film can launch your career. Just ask Damien Chazelle whose short, Whiplash, opened the doors to direct his feature of the same name. Paul Thomas Anderson, Sofia Coppola, George Lucas and even Steven Spielberg all followed similar paths.
The problem is it's REALLY HARD to write, finance, cast, direct, edit and distribute an amazing short film and there really aren't resources available to teach you how to do it.
But what if you had a proven blueprint to guide you through the process?
Changed My Life
Since I was in high school in Anchorage, Alaska, I dreamed of becoming a filmmaker. In 2008 when I moved to Los Angeles, I imagined the doors would open and job opportunities would be plentiful.
Wow, how wrong I was...
Establishing a career in the entertainment industry is extremely competitive and I ended up working in various low-level PA and art department jobs before falling back to work in a completely different field just to make ends meet. Luckily, I eventually was able to find a job doing production and was thrilled to be doing what I loved.
In 2012, I founded my own production company and figured that eventually, I would have the chance to create film and television not just commercials. But fast forward to 2017 and although I had an office, a great team and amazing clients, in over 5 years I still hadn't gotten any closer to my dream of actually making films!
Everything changed when I finally took the leap to produce a short film called SOULS OF TOTALITY. I had worked on shorts before but this was different. There was an amazing cast including Emmy-winner Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) and most importantly it was an incredible script.
SOULS OF TOTALITY POSTER
I threw myself into the process and we somehow were able to get the money, crew, cast, locations and dozens of other pieces together to actually make a short.
It isn't an exaggeration to say the resulting film changed my career.
We were an official selection for Tribeca, won a dozen film festivals including 3 Oscar-qualifying fests and the film is still being distributed to audiences around the world!
That opened the doors to exciting new film and TV projects with well-known actors, showing my work at festivals around the world and distributing to millions around the world with partners like HBO.
Filmmakers reach out to me all the time asking me the same question— how can I create a short that will change my career?
I'm a big believer in the power of the creative community to help each of us with our journey and it's certainly helped me. So over 10 short films later, I set out to break down the "system" to attract known actors, raise money, win festivals and reach millions.
After over a year of developing that "system", I am thrilled to share Short Film Deep Dive!
